Wander along the tracks which lead through the vineyards, glued to the granite hills all the way to Ortenbourg, an imposing 12th century fortification.
On the steep slopes, caressed by the influence of a semi-continental micro-climate, the site known as Rittersberg lies before you, with all its structure, fruit and mineral characteristics.
Ortenberg is a sandier site, and its racey, complex wines have subtly floral notes.
Riesling from Scherwiller is a perfect expression of its terroir (gravelly with sandy alluvium) giving wines that are expressive, elegant and fruity.
You will reach Scherwiller by the roman road, and its military mileposts, remains of the 2nd century.
The stroll will end in the Frey-Sohler cellars, where the family will share the subtleties of terroir and their know-how with you.

On the slopes of the Rittersberg, ( with its warm, well drained granite soil) and on the very site of the famous "peasant's war" of 1525 (alluvial soil), our terroir has made our name for us. Produced exclusively at the foot of the Chateau, the Rittersberg wines are a step up in the heirarchy of Alsace wines. The land is a direct continuation of the Ortenbourg biotope, which is a protected site for its flora and fauna, with a micro-climate 7 to 8 degrees centigrade above the average for Alsace.
